Increasing Resource Equity
In recent decades, states generally have disinvested from higher education. Every year, a disproportionate share of more than $290 billion that states spend on higher education goes to the colleges that already have the most resources — primarily state flagships, which under-enroll Black students, Latino students, and students from low-income backgrounds. So, the colleges that enroll the majority of these students — such as community colleges, minority-serving institutions, and regional public colleges — are resigned to do more with much less. However, the colleges and universities that serve larger percentages of students of color usually require more resources, and thus, should be receiving more funding, not less. Ed Trust seeks to shift the paradigm and advance more equitable resources, investments, and outcomes in higher education for students of color.
