The Associate Director of Development will serve as a thought leader and strategic partner to the Chief Development Officer to support the growth of the organization’s donor base. The Associate Director will be responsible for the overall execution of grant proposal development and funder reporting. The successful candidate will collaborate with key team members across the organization to create winning grant proposals that reflect Ed Trust’s funding priorities while also engaging in best practices in financial stewardship and funder relations. The role will be responsible for diversifying grant funding by strategically promoting new lines of work to prospective foundation and corporate donors aligned with Ed Trust’s mission. In addition, the Associate Director of Development will plan and execute donor cultivation events.
The position will be located at our headquarters in Washington, DC. However, the Associate Director of Development will also coordinate development efforts with Ed Trust’s offices in California, Michigan, and New York.

- Partner with the CDO in building and sustaining a culture of philanthropy and an elevated understanding of fundraising for staff throughout the organization
- Diversify grant prospect list to support funding priorities and the strategic plan
- Collaborate with the CDO and CEO in planning prospective funder relationship strategies
- Develop and execute the grant application and reporting processes including, but not limited to, proposal and report writing, budget development, quality assurance, and timely submission
- Ensure compliance with grant deliverables and funder guidelines for all grant awards through work with grant managers and finance team
- Produce materials such as concept papers, proposals, reports, or case for support in conjunction with program staff and subject matter experts
- Lead funder relationship management activities including phone calls, correspondence, mailings, and meetings with donors and their representatives, engaging key Ed Trust team members as appropriate
- Plan and execute cultivation events and follow up activities (with occasional travel to donor events or Ed Trust state offices)
- Leverage donor database (Salesforce) and grants management software (Sage Intacct) to effectively track and improve funder engagement strategies
- Prepare reports and presentations for leadership and Board of Directors, as needed
We are looking for a combination of the following qualifications and experience:
- B.A. or B.S. degree required
- A minimum of four to six years of experience in fundraising, including a minimum of three years of grant proposal development
- Track record of building relationships with foundation funders
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to multi-task across multiple projects and internal stakeholders
- A good understanding of the national philanthropic landscape
- Database experience preferred, preferably Salesforce or other CRM
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
- Passion for improving the educational experiences and outcomes for students from low-income backgrounds and students of color.
