Policy Fellow, Higher Education, Tennessee Part-Time

About the Organization and the Opportunity

The Education Trust in Tennessee seeks a Policy Fellow for its Higher Education work who believes data and research-driven policy are critical to supporting students, district leaders, state policymakers, and other stakeholders. The Fellow will support an ambitious, equity-driven policy agenda and immerse themselves in Tennessee’s education policy and advocacy landscape. Fellows are integral team members who have opportunities to support and lead projects, as well as gain professional skills and experiences aligned with their expertise and interests. The Fellow will join a passionate staff at Ed Trust who are committed to fulfilling a mission of closing opportunity gaps that disproportionately affect students of color and students from low-income families.

Ed Trust is comprised of fierce advocates for the high academic achievement of all students — pre-kindergarten through college, particularly those of color or living in poverty. Through research and advocacy, Ed Trust’s goal is to close the gaps in opportunity and achievement that affect millions of young people across the U.S. — especially students of color and those from low-income families. We work alongside educators, policymakers, parents, and community and business leaders across the country to advocate transforming schools and colleges into institutions that serve all students well. Lessons learned in these efforts, together with unflinching data analyses, help shape our state and national policy agendas.

This role, available immediately, is based in our Nashville, Tennessee office and is available for approximately 20 hours/week between September and December. The Fellow reports to the Policy Analyst.

About the Policy Fellow Role

Major responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Collecting, managing, and analyzing higher education data to support policy, research, and advocacy efforts that are accessible and actionable
  • Utilizing data and research to produce written products (e.g., fact sheets, policy memos, reports, blog posts, and presentations) to advance our policy agenda
  • Conducting data and research inquiries from a variety of internal and external stakeholders

  • Experience and/or strong understanding of quantitative and qualitative data collection, management, analysis, and visualization, including advanced Excel, Tableau, and STATA
  • Experience and/or strong understanding of federal, state, and local contexts and levers that affect the Tennessee higher education policy landscape
  • Desire to work in an equity-driven and student-centered organization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills leveraged to translate complex data, research, and policy to a variety of audiences
  • Organization, self-motivation, and high attention to detail
  • Dedication to prioritizing and multi-task to meet deadlines
  • Comfort working both independently and collaboratively with a focus on continually improving processes

Required Qualifications and Experience

Fellows may be in the last year of pursuing their Bachelor’s degree, in a Master’s degree program, or a recent graduate student focused on education policy or a related field.


Compensation for this position ranges from $17/hr-$22/hr, commensurate with education and experience. All interns are eligible for sick leave.
