Senior Higher Education Research Analyst

The Education Trust seeks a Senior Research Analyst to join the organization’s Higher Education team. Reporting to the Director of Research and Data Analytics, the Senior Research Analyst will play a lead role in the data analysis and reporting work of the Higher Education team. The Senior Research Analyst will help produce research that highlights trends and current inequities in higher education that affect students of color and low-income students. The analyst will develop research briefs, data tools, blogs, presentations, and social media communications that will advance, promote, and elevate the organization’s key higher education priorities. The work will primarily focus on using institution-level and state-level data to create compelling narratives about the current state of access, affordability, and success for low-income students and students of color in postsecondary education.

Major Responsibilities

The Senior Research Analyst’s responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct quantitative analyses that examine socioeconomic and race-based patterns in opportunity and success.
  • Mine data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and other sources to identify institutions and states that are successfully enrolling and graduating underserved populations, or making fast or significant progress in those areas
  • Help with the development and analysis of equity metrics that assess how committed institutions and states are to access, affordability, and success for students of color and low-income students
  • Analyze national datasets to identify barriers to access and success for low-income and underrepresented students in higher education, and generate written reports or briefs to communicate the findings
  • Assist with the redesign, improvement, and annual update of College Results Online, an interactive webtool for students, policymakers, and institutional leaders that provides information on over 2,000 four-year colleges and universities across the nation.
  • Be a spokesperson for the organization, speaking with reporters, practitioners, and advocates, and contributing to Ed Trust’s social media presence and our blogs
  • Support the organization’s efforts to leverage data and research to inform policy design and practice, including assisting with the development of tools and processes to aid postsecondary improvement efforts
  • Increase accessibility to data for higher education stakeholders through the use of innovative data tools, sources, manipulation, context, and design
  • Support the Education Trust’s efforts in developing and analyzing Federal and State policy proposals on key higher education issues, particularly in relation to the use of data and metrics related to institutional improvement and accountability
  • Draft literature reviews, memoranda, and other documents on key access, affordability, and success issues related to the division’s mission
  • Package research and data for lay audiences and funders in Ed Trust presentations, briefs/reports, webtools, blogs, grant applications, and the website
  • Respond to rapid response inquiries about data and research from staff, policymakers, advocates, the media, and the public.

Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for a combination of the following qualifications and experience:

  • A minimum of 4-5 years of experience in a research role addressing higher education issues
  • A master’s degree in higher education, education policy, public policy, statistics, or a related field
  • Excellent analytic and communication skills (both oral and written, and in a variety of formats and contexts)
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage self-productivity and communicate with team members to deliver under deadline pressures
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in Excel and R, and/or STATA; or advanced knowledge and experience in another statistical software (i.e., SPSS, SQL, Python) and a willingness to learn R. Experience with Tableau a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to produce quantitative and qualitative research analyses that address key issues in higher education with a keen emphasis on equity and closing gaps in opportunity and outcomes
  • Knowledge of higher education data sources, such as longitudinal state data systems, federal databases (e.g., Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, National Postsecondary Student Aid Survey, Beginning Postsecondary Student Survey), and other national sources (e.g., the National Student Clearinghouse, Student Achievement Measure)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple research projects in tandem
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and manipulate data and large datasets and conduct both descriptive and inferential data analyses
  • Ability to work autonomously on coding, parsing, cleaning, and aggregating data; and
  • A nuanced understanding of equity and the key issues that affect students of color and students from low-income backgrounds
