Statement by The Education Trust on Critical Amendments the House Should Include in Appropriations Bill

Publication date: Sep 5, 2017

WASHINGTON – Today The Education Trust released the following statement ahead of the U.S. House of Representatives voting on the remaining FY18 appropriations bills.

“There have not been many bright spots in the FY18 appropriations process thus far. But several members of Congress have stepped up and offered important amendments in the House of Representatives that would make a real difference for low-income students and students of color.

  • Representatives Maxine Waters and Bobby Scott each have amendments that would block the raid from the Pell Grant program;
  • Representatives Mark Pocan, Bobby Scott, and Barbara Lee are proposing an increase in the maximum Pell Grant by $135; and
  • Representatives David Price and Jared Polis are both offering amendments to restore funding to Title II.

“These amendments support critical investments our country needs to make in our students and our schools. They deserve a full debate and vote in the House. We are grateful to these members for their work and stand with them in this effort.”
