Building Better Futures — Equitable College and Career Navigation

Every year, students face a stream of decisions that shape their future, what courses to take, whether to pursue advanced coursework, which career exploration opportunities to seek out, what path to take after graduation. School counselors, already stretched thin at a national ratio of 372 students per counselor, often have little capacity to provide the ongoing, individualized guidance students need to successfully navigate their futures. In addition, districts across the country, including well-resourced ones, have proposed or enacted cuts to school counselor and dedicated navigator roles, and federal programs like TRIO and GEAR UP, which play a key role in helping many students navigate their postsecondary options, have faced proposed elimination.
