EdTrust Continues to Express Opposition to Unlawful Dismantlement of the Department of Education
Statement from Roxanne Garza, Director of Higher Education Policy at EdTrust on the Inter-Agency Agreement moving the federal student loan portfolio to the Department of Treasury

WASHINGTON — “EdTrust remains opposed to unlawful IAAs that move key governmental functions and programs out of the agency of authority and expertise into others without it. In the immediate, we are very concerned about what this means for borrowers with student loans in default. If this portfolio does move to the Department of Treasury, what kind of support would borrowers have? Is the Treasury equipped to support student loan borrowers with their options for income-driven repayment, discharge, or rehabilitation? This just adds another level of chaos and confusion and complexity to a system that is about to undergo massive changes made through the Republican reconciliation law.

“The administration has, per Congress, ‘no authority’ to take these actions and is now risking the functionality of a student financial aid system that facilitates millions of students accessing college. We reiterate our opposition to this IAA, and all others, and call upon Congress to pass laws reclaiming its authority and preventing this and all other unprecedented and drastic transfers of authority.”
