In 2020, The Education Trust released a seminal report called Social, Emotional, and Academic Development Through an Equity Lens. This report highlights the need to broaden the focus on supporting social and emotional learning to creating systemic changes that equitably integrate efforts to support social, emotional, and academic dzevelopment. The report identifies six key policy areas critical to integrating efforts to holistically support both social and emotional needs and academic learning for students: discipline; rigorous & culturally sustaining curriculum; educator diversity; professional development; student, family & community engagement; and wraparound services.

About This Analysis

These scans are based on publicly available information as of 2021, including state education websites, published materials by states, and legislation. Each of the states were offered an opportunity to review the information in these scans, and while many states provided feedback, others did not. Policies that earned a green or “meets criteria” were given a 2. Policies that earned a yellow or “partially meets” were given a 1. Policies that earned a red or “does not meet” earned a 0. These scores were averaged for each policy area to give a percentage that pertains to the color gradient with dark red indicating 0% and dark green indicating 100%.
