Reggie Chatman

Justice Fellow

Reggie Chatman is a public health, youth justice, and education advocate. He was incarcerated from 17 to 42 years of age in the New York State Prison System. While incarcerated, Reggie received his bachelor’s degree in social studies and biology from the Bard College Prison Initiative (BPI). Following his release, he went on to earn his master of public health in epidemiology and health policy and practice from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.

Reggie believes that education is a form of justice that has the potential to transform lives, communities, and systems. To that end, he has worked as an educator for detained youth and facilitated debate workshops for youth sentenced to Alternative To Incarceration (ATI) programing. Reggie is also the director of policy at The Fortune Society where he seeks to bring his public health lens to the criminal legal system and education policy space.
