EdTrust in Louisiana receives the Excellence in Education Award and the Zakim Award

LOUISIANA — When EdTrust in Louisiana first launched in 2018, it solidified a commitment to promoting education equity for underserved students in Louisiana’s schools. Today, EdTrust in Louisiana remains steadfast in this mission and, after fomenting relationships with partners, advocates, families, has garnered countless advocacy wins across the state. Due to these achievements, EdTrust in Louisiana has received two prestigious national awards: The Zakim Award and the Excellence in Education Award.

Dual enrollment has been a policy priority for EdTrust in Louisiana, as they have partnered closely with the Louisiana Board of Regents to ensure access to advanced coursework for students of color. The team has spoken with over 500 Louisiana students to develop their understanding the ways to access higher education while in high school, creating Louisiana Dual Enrollment, a resource to help students, families, and school counselors access dual enrollment opportunities throughout the state.

Because of their advocacy and policy influence in this line of work, EdTrust in Louisiana has been awarded an Excellence in Education Award. This national award, presented by The College Board, is given to organizations that demonstrate incredible work in promoting equity in education and a commitment to ensuring Black and other underserved students have access to higher education and opportunities.

“It’s been an absolute honor working hand in hand with Louisiana students and families these last few years. This award is a testament to the power of collective advocacy to better serve students of color in our community,” says Tramelle Howard, state director of EdTrust in Louisiana.

Additionally, EdTrust in Louisiana’s Amplify LA Student Leadership Academy has received the Zakim Award. This national award, presented by Team Harmony, is given to high school students who have demonstrated their commitment to promoting racial and social justice.

“Student voice has always been at the core of our advocacy, because we believe students play a central role in in helping shape policies and practices that affect them directly. This award reflects the brilliance and potential of our students here in Louisiana,” says Ciara Hart, external relations manager for EdTrust in Louisiana.
