Statement from Augustus Mays, vice president of partnerships and engagement of EdTrust on the advancement of H.R. 7890, the Science of Reading Act

WASHINGTON – “EdTrust is pleased to see bipartisan legislation, H.R. 7890, the Science of Reading Act of 2026, advance out of the Committee on Education & Workforce.

“Our nation is facing a literacy crisis, as evidenced by recent NAEP scores that consistently show that too many students in the United States are performing below grade level in reading, especially our students of color and students from low-income backgrounds. Reading is a civil right — and a ladder to opportunity both in school and in the workforce. This bipartisan bill uplifts the importance of the Science of Reading to ensure schools are using evidence-based literacy practices to tackle this crisis and strengthen learning outcomes. Literacy isn’t a red or blue issue; it’s a priority for all Americans. When our students succeed, America succeeds.
