The Federal Freeze of $660 Million in TRIO Funding Stymies Students From Accessing and Completing College
Statement from Tramelle Howard, EdTrust in Louisiana, State Director

WASHINGTON – “The federal freeze of $660 million in TRIO program funds is a devastating blow to the students who rely on these programs to access and complete higher education. TRIO programs — including Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services — provide tutoring, advising, and mentorship to low-income and first-generation college students, veterans, student-parents, and students with disabilities.

“If you believe every student deserves a chance to go to and graduate from college, then you have to believe in TRIO. Withholding these funds isn’t saving money; it’s closing doors.

“This freeze is especially harmful for MSIs, which partner with many TRIO programs and serve a large share of low-income and first-generation students. When TRIO is disrupted, these institutions face added strain, and their students face steeper barriers.

“Weakening TRIO not only hurts individual students but also undermines America’s workforce and competitiveness. We urge the U.S. Department of Education and Congress to immediately release the frozen funds and safeguard TRIO in future budgets. Investing in TRIO is investing in America’s future.”
