The cost of college continues to rise, making a college degree out of reach for millions of people — especially students of color and students from low-income backgrounds. All colleges and universities should put people over profits. Accountability in higher ed means making sure that state and federal governments adopt higher education policies that protect students and families from fraud and bad investments while ensuring that all members of the public have access to an affordable, high-quality education. As Congress considers reauthorizing the Higher Education Act (HEA), there is an opportunity to implement a holistic accountability system that invests in equity, holds college campuses responsible, and protects students and their families.
