Veronica Horowitz, Ph.D., is a professor of sociology and criminology at the University at Buffalo. Her research focuses on U.S. criminal punishment with a sub focus on gender. Her current work uses mixed method approaches to investigate several forms of punishment. Specifically, she studies an under-utilized form of mercy in U.S. criminal justice, executive clemency, legal financial obligations, dual debts (persons with both criminal justice and child support debt), attitudes and experiences of correctional officers, the experience of prison from the perspective of those who are currently incarcerated, and a related comparative international project investigating the adoption of Norwegian principles in a U.S. prison.
