Carolina is responsible for supporting efforts to advance educational equity through policy research, coalition-building, and communications for EdTrust-Massachusetts. Her work focuses on communicating findings, supporting advocacy initiatives, engaging partners and stakeholders, and contributing to research and policy efforts that promote equitable opportunities and outcomes for students across Massachusetts.
Prior to joining EdTrust, Carolina was recruited by Teach for America, where she taught English Language Arts while also serving the function of an English as a Second Language (ESL) educator. As an educator, she achieved successful literacy outcomes through supporting her students by equipping them with the skills to access grade-level texts. She later transitioned to higher education where she worked in development for a university focused on economic mobility and equitable access.
Carolina earned bachelor’s degrees in political science and philosophy from Arizona State University and holds a master of education in Curriculum and Teaching (English) from Boston University.
What’s your favorite thing to do outside of work?
My favorite thing to do outside of work is anything art related. I also love to spend time with my siblings.
What drew you to education? Why are you passionate about working at EdTrust?
Education has always been a safe space for me where I could explore new ideas and find respite from the chaos at home. As I grew older, my love of learning deepened, but so did my awareness of the inequities embedded within our educational system.
I was fortunate enough to attend University High School, a specialized school that gave me the academic foundation and opportunities to succeed, but I came to realize that many students are not afforded the same advantages. Through my interest in education policy, I saw that the issue is a lack of equitable opportunities for all. That realization solidified my commitment to advancing education equity. I am passionate about working at EdTrust because its mission aligns closely with the values that have shaped my life.
