Ed Trust Is Disappointed by the Senate’s Actions to Dismantle
the Biden Administration’s Student Debt Relief Plan

Statement by Wil Del Pilar, Ph.D., senior vice president of The Education Trust

WASHINGTON (June 1, 2023) — “The Education Trust is disappointed to see the Senate vote to advance a measure that will harm millions of student loan borrowers by eliminating the administration’s student loan cancellation plan, which is supported by a majority of Americans. Many borrowers are desperate for relief, and this bill will force them immediately back into repayment. This will harm most borrowers, with the most pain inflicted on Black borrowers, who, due to systemic racism, are more likely to borrow, borrow more, struggle with repayment, and default on their student loans than their peers.

“We urge the Senate to rectify its mistake by rejecting final passage of the resolution later this week. And if passed, we urge President Biden to veto the resolution if it makes it to his desk.”
