Press Release

Congress has passed a higher education package that will fund HBCUs and other MSIs for 10 years, simplify the FAFSA, and streamline loan repayment

WASHINGTON (December 11, 2019) – Today, Denise Forte, vice president of partnerships and engagement at The Education Trust, issued the following statement:

“The Education Trust hails the passage of this deal to extend mandatory funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and minority-serving institutions (MSIs), improve access to federal financial aid for millions of applicants, and make it easier for student loan borrowers to stay in their repayment plans. We encourage the president to sign this measure and look forward to it becoming law.

Congress should celebrate this victory by continuing to work toward a bipartisan, comprehensive, student-centered overhaul of the Higher Education Act (HEA). We look forward to participating in that process in 2020.”
