Assistant Director, P-12 Communications

As part of the Communications team, Joe Weedon prepares senior leaders for public outreach and engagement opportunities and advises team members on strategies to advance Ed Trust’s P-12 education equity agenda.

Joe brings with him vast communications experience in education, advocacy, and corporate social responsibility. Prior to joining Education Trust, Joe served as a consultant and lead communications expert for the Washington Teachers’ Union, where he designed and led public affairs campaigns to amplify teacher and parent voice in public education debates in the District of Columbia.

Joe was elected in a non-partisan race to the District of Columbia State Board of Education in 2014 and served one term. He holds an MBA from the University of Maryland – College Park and an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Joe and his wife, Amy, are the parents of two D.C. Public School students.

What’s your favorite thing to do outside of work?
Take in a baseball game with my family. Go Nats!

What drew you to education?
In my first job out of college, I worked on education issues; it’s been a passion since.

Why are you passionate about working at Ed Trust?
The mission. Every student deserves the opportunity for a great education. Ed Trust is out there working to close the gaps and ensure that every student gets the opportunity they deserve.
